Tthe History of the SMOOTH FOX TERRIERS VON HAUS LUSITANIA

 

Our very first Smooth Fox Terrier was a white and tan male, tenderly known as Turra, born 1st. September 1967 in Durban, South Africa. It was a very typical dog with a genuine fox terrier temperament and somewhat leggy. It was the only dog that came with us to Portugal from Mozambique in 1974, and died at the age of 13 years old, leaving a strong sentiment of owning Fox Terriers.

All dogs that bred and existed at my parents’ home carried names starting with the letter “T”. Initially, I believe, this was due to unexplained reasons or coincidence. However, since that time it has been a tradition that has been respected and followed.
Some twenty years after, in 1996, we acquired a pair of Smooth Fox Terriers with enough consanguinity to becoming the foundation of the Von Haus Lusitania Smooth Fox Terriers. The affix VON HAUS LUSITANIA was chosen to breed our loved Boxers friends. When decided to have and to breed SFT, obviously, I carried that affix to Smooth Fox Terriers breeding programme, too.

The male, a combination of top Australian and top English bloodlines,  CH. Leote da Quinta da Cruz  da Pedra (S8) (LOP Nº 151733) grand-son of the World CH. 1993 Maryland Pepe Tanny (which is great grand-son of Aust. CH. Grenpark Hi-Fire) and great grand-son of Sufredon Inkling (S3), Riber Mint Imperial (S3), Riber Ramsey (S8) and Rotur Repertoire (S2), from Mr. Luis Sajara's, Quinta da Cruz da Pedra  SFT Kennel. The female Miura (SX) (LOP Nº 154082), three times great grand-daughter of the World CH. Elk v.d. Bismarquelle, CH.Sprotboro Sir Ivor (A2) and CH.Britlea Bizet, from Azambuja SFT Kennel owned by Mr. Rui Vasconcellos.

In these circumstances and with this pair of SFT, we managed to put together the breeding of 19 consecutive generations of a female-tail line officially identifiable as born and bred in Portugal. We emphasize that the Von Haus Lusitania SFT has the accumulated experience and the genes acquired from the following Portuguese SFT kennels: Quinta da Cruz da Pedra, Azambuja, Heather’s Farm, São Lourenço de Ermesinde, Alvalade and Clube Português de Caçadores.
The females originating from those kennels were mated and improved by stud males imported, mainly, from UK and, only at random, from Germany, France and Spain.  For history, study, register and record purposes, we must mention the stud male’s names that have left their print and strong influence on the Von Haus Lusitania Smooth Fox Terriers:

• CH. Teco de São Lourenço de Ermezinde (AX) (LOP 17080) a son of Sir Ivor.
• CH. Leote da Quinta da Cruz da Pedra (S8) (LOP 151733).
• Tutu Bishop von Haus Lusitania (SX) (LOP 189075).

- When genetic students refer to an animal’s genetic make-up, they say “male-tail blood lines” and “female-tail blood families”.  It is understood that male-tail bloodline is the direct transmission from sire’s, sire’s, sire’s to son and so on and female-tail blood family is the direct transmission from dam’s, dam’s, dam’s to daughter and so on. This system was introduced to the pedigree breeding of livestock by a Mr. Bruce Lowe in his book Breeding Race Horses published about 1905, and is best known in its application to race horse breeding.

- Therefore, the genetic selection, through a pedigree, should consider, in theory, only the first and last lines of the pedigree giving less importance to the intermediate lines. So that is quite easy to trace back to its tap root almost any dog or bitch of the present time.

Through the available records we managed to established (i) the male-tail blood lines of our  Von Haus Lusitania SFT as being  “S” (that is descendants of the famous CH. Splinter, via the CH. Oxonian)  and we intend to maintain in a consistent manner in this male-tail blood line;  and (ii)  we consider that our female-tail blood family must be classified as  “X” (family not traced back to 1860) because nineteen generations back the founder female Andorinha (translation as: Swallow)  LOP-RI nº 3123 bred by Clube Português de Caçadores and owned by Dr. António Cabral’s  Alvalade SFT kennel and dam of Nicha de Alvalade (LOP nº 11218) has not its female-tail blood family traced, but this was nineteen generations ago and in the course of the last generations the intermediate female-tail blood families, in their pedigree, are predominantly members of female-tail blood families #3 and #8, having their founders as the UK females STING (1860) and RUSTIC QUEEN (1844) respectively.

Consequently and in conclusion, the Von Haus Lusitania Smooth Fox Terriers must be codified as “SX”. However, this reconnaissance does not disqualify, in any way, the excellence of the present Von Haus Lusitania SFT’s. On the contrary, it shows and proofs the concern which the breeding is programmed, the knowledge that we want to be deep and above all to be honest and without any complex to assume its code-grade “X”.

Eventually, it will be established, for the future, a female-tail blood family line of Smooth Fox Terriers (Fox Terriers de Pêlo Liso)
very closed related to Portugal and that will allow ourselves to denominate this specific SFT family as ANDORINHAS (Swallows) in memoriam to the founder bitch.

• 2.The first two females officially registered at  LOP (Livro de Origens Português -the Portuguese stud book-) Nicha de Alvalade and Nadira de Alvalade were from male-tail blood line “B” (Watteau Battleshaft) and from male-tail blood line “S” (Splinter/Oxonian) respectively, from which the best  present  SFT are descending from, and they surpass thirty generations since the breed foundation.

This means that present Von Haus Lusitania SFT’s pedigrees can be traced back to some fifty generations, going with no doubts to the foundation of the breed in the decade of 1860 to Grove Tartar, Grove Nettle, Splinter through Oxonian, Southboro Sandeman, Dandifino, Corrector of Notts, Lethal Weapon, Watteau Midas, Watteau Chorister, Watteau Snuffbox,  Riber Mint Imperial,  Sufredon Inkling, Riber Ramsey, Harkaway Lancashire Lad, Brooklands Black Prince, Wynneville Charlie Boy, Lingfield  Fame, Grenpark Hi-Fire, Farleton Don Pedro, Ttarb The Bratt,  and many other since the  II WW until the present day, just to mention a few.

• 4.In 19th April 2005, we decided to introduce into our SFT breeding programme a second female-tail blood family through an imported female named Tocoa Key Von Haus Lusitania (S3). This bitch belongs to female-tail blood family #3 (founded by Sting, which on 1860 belongs to Rev. W. Handley). She will be covered by stud males, from our present stock, with similar structure.

At same time we also imported a stud male Tocoa Karol Von Haus Lusitania (S3)  in order to improve our initial Andorinha’s female-tail family line started with our first bred bitch Tudor-Rose Von Haus Lusitania (SX) born on June 13,1998.

Eventually, we shall be able, in two or three separated and independent generations of our present two SFT families, to matting their off spring to each other, in order to amalgamate them through line breeding.

However, we would keep, in future, a complete separate identity of these our two female-tail family lines, but with some common genetic base.
Our main achievement is and will be, always to be capable to follow the breed standard and to breed for Harmony, Excellence, and Type and correct Temperament. These are our obsession. !!!  However, we keep in the mind the breed primary function of being a working terrier.

Our motif “Prestantia Super Omnia” meaning -Quality above all- will be followed and through that, we will make the “SWALLOWS” or “ANDORINHAS” to arrive safely to Springtime season!!!!
